Earthquake Hits Haiti

Hope for Haiti's Children is responding quickly to the needs of the Haitian people. This morning our Haiti Program Director and her husband are attempting to get into Port-au-Prince to deliver medical supplies and help with relief efforts. On Saturday, our Medical Mission team was scheduled to go to Haiti to conduct a clinic for all of our sponsored children. We have cancelled this clinic and are waiting until we have a clearer picture of the needs and how best to proceed. The devastastion is overwhelming.

We just heard from Debbie. Jeantyrard reported that the two top floors of one of our schools, the Delmas Christian Secondary School (also the Delmas Church of Christ), fell into the road. There was a nursing class in session. We know there are injuries but don't know the extent.
The children at the Cazeau Orphanage are all OK. Praise God. Please continue to pray.

The largest earthquake ever recorded in the area shook Haiti a few hours ago. The earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.0 and was centered about 10 miles (15 kilometers) west of the capital of Port-au-Prince. It had a depth of 5 miles (8 kilometers) and was the largest quake recorded in the area and the last major one since a magnitude-6.7 one in 1984.

Some of our sponsored children live in the Port-au-Prince area. Many live in the surrounding cities. We do not know anything yet as to their safety or about damage. We do know that our Haiti Program Director, Debbie Vanderbeek, is OK. We will continue to update you as we find out more. Please keep the people of Haiti in your prayers.

We are so sad that the medical trip has to be postponed as I'm sure the need is great. However, it does make sense to pause and regroup to make sure the right supplies are being brought in. We are hopeful that the children we have been sponsoring are okay and know that our hearts are with them.
